Child's Play
By Mike Rule
God wants to be acknowledged in every moment and area of our
lives. We fail to understand how deep our hard heartedness and
lack of faith really goes. So much Christian teaching today is
really teaching unbelief. We are taught, "God won't do you
for what you must do for yourself." This is a lie. If we can
accomplish it, it's not the true work of the Father, it's just
child's play.
Most children want to participate with daddy in his work, but
are not capable of doing the work themselves. Loving fathers
invite participation and give the child some small task to do. If
the child has any wisdom, they know they can't do the task
themselves. A true loving father would never deny his child when
the child has come and said, "Daddy, I can't..." At
that point the father says, "Alright, now here's what we are
going to do..." The father will walk with the child step by
step through the task. He will give the child things they can do
with his direction and his guidance. It may seem that the child
is accomplishing the work, but a truly wise child knows that
without the father it would be a mess. It is only because of the
work of the father that anything has been accomplished. When the
work is done, the father and child step back and look with pride
at what they have done together. Then the child looks up at daddy
with wonder and amazement because of the works of his daddy's
hands.
So much of what we call the work of the Kingdom really is
child's play. The work that our Father wants to do is so much
beyond our ability. When we are participating with Him in His
work, we know there is no way we can accomplish anything and He
gets the praise and glory for the works of His hands. He loves us
so much that He invites us to participate with Him in His work.
Why do we deny Him so readily by preaching all that we must do,
and all that we must strive for? All that He asks is that we rest
in Him and recognize our desperate need for Him in every moment
and area of life. If we can accomplish it, who's work are we
really doing?
